The University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA) optics laboratory has a custom built 20 Watt carbon dioxide (CO2) LASER on campus. Students can become familiar with atomic and molecular excitation levels and other quantum mechanical phenomena as well as wave physics and optics topics like resonance and diffraction. The laser is currently being used by local students to epitaxially grow graphene sheets on silicon carbide.
